As strange as this may sound, this home remedy is said to work very well. You can do this one of two ways. Get a bowl that is big enough to fit your hand into and fill it half way with water. Put several ice cubes in the water. If the toothache is on the left side of the body place your right hand in the water. If the toothache is on the right side of the body place your left hand in the water. Gently massage the webbed, v-shaped area between the index finger and thumb with your free hand. If you do not want to put your whole hand in freezing cold water, just use an ice cube to massage the area between the index finger and thumb.
Use a wheat grass mouthwash to relieve that toothache. It has natural antibacterial properties and it works great for a toothache. You can purchase wheat grass juice at your local health food store or on the Internet.
Ground black pepper mixed with a little salt and clove oil is extremely effective against a toothache. Mix a pinch of ground black pepper and 1/4 teaspoon of table salt with a tablespoon or so of clove oil and apply directly to the affected tooth or rinse your entire mouth with the mixture.
Do not use the following remedy on babies or children. Whiskey and brandy are great for eliminating tooth pain and bacteria. Soak a cotton ball, a piece of gauze, or cotton wool with the alcohol and apply it directly onto the tooth. You could also take a mouthful of whiskey or brandy and swish it around in your mouth for a few minutes to obtain the same effect.
Vanilla extract works in much the same way as whiskey or brandy for a toothache. Soak a cotton ball, a piece of gauze, or cotton wool with vanilla extract, not imitation vanilla, and apply it directly onto the tooth. Use it as a mouthwash if you prefer. It will work just as well.

Cure Hemorrhoids Naturally – Treating Hemorrhoids With Ginger, Olive Oil and Spinach

Cure Hemorrhoids Naturally – Treating Hemorrhoids With Ginger, Olive Oil and Spinach

Hemorrhoids (also known as piles) are a very common ailment today that affects both women and men, both old and young. Hemorrhoids develop when the veins in the anal and rectal regions become varicosed. This is sometimes because of the difficulty in passing stools when a person is frequently constipated. There are other factors that contribute to the growth of hemorrhoids, such as aging, frequent diarrhea and old age.

Hemorrhoids are a very uncomfortable and painful problem, which is why those who have it are desperate for fast cures. The common symptoms include blood in stools, pain when trying to pass stools and itching in one’s anal region.

Why You Can And Should Treat Hemorrhoids Using Things You’ll Find In Your Kitchen ?

Of course, you can always go to the doctor to ask for various medicated creams and pills to treat hemorrhoids. However, they are often very expensive and sometimes ineffective. In addition, remember that most medicines have side effects that you may have to deal with.

If you use the things that you would commonly find in your kitchen, you can save a lot of money. Did you know that you can actually treat hemorrhoids using items that you probably have at your home right now? There’s no need for you to go out and buy fancy stuff that could cost hundreds of dollars. Try the safer, more natural option and treat hemorrhoids yourself. There are no side effects to this home cure, which is not only cheap but very effective as well.

How To Use Ginger, Olive Oil And Spinach To Treat Hemorrhoids ?

Ginger

Ginger is one of the best available treatments for hemorrhoids. Here is how you can make your own all-natural hemorrhoid medicine that is both tasty and effective. Mix one half teaspoon of juice from a fresh ginger with a teaspoon of fresh mint juice and a teaspoon of fresh lime juice. Add a tablespoon of honey to make the concoction taste better and take this everyday. You should see improvements in your hemorrhoids within two weeks.

Olive Oil And Spinach

Spinach is well known to have anti-oxidants, and is effective as an anti-inflammatory when it is combined with olive oil. Get three fresh spinach leaves and a tablespoon of olive oil. Chop the leaves as finely as you can and mix them well with olive oil. Stir the concoction until it acquires a paste-like texture.

Get a latex glove to ensure that the hemorrhoids won’t get infected. Dip the tip of your finger into the paste and carefully apply it on the hemorrhoids. Put the remaining spinach and olive oil paste into sterile gauze and put it directly on the rectum, keeping it in place with bandage or plaster. Change the gauze whenever you feel that the paste is drying up.

You should continue doing this until the inflammation of the hemorrhoids begins to dissipate. You will see improvements in just one day; though you must continue applying the spinach and olive oil bandage until the hemorrhoids completely dries up.

Hemorrhoids can be treated effectively with home relief or piles herbal remedies. But in some case hemorrhoid surgery maybe your solution.

Vinegar bath: Vinegar is acidic, and because the bacteria responsible for the infection (Candida albicans) loves alkaline environments, vinegar’s alteration of your vaginal pH will make it impossible for the bacteria to survive. What?S In A First Aid Kit?

What?S In A First Aid Kit?

There can be many different things in a first aid kit.  The best kits are the ones that you yourself have packed so that you know that you have covered everything that you or your family may need including prescription medications as well as things that may be specific to your environment.

However, there are some things that the Red Cross recommends to be in every first aid kit.  That list is:

2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)
25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)
1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch)
5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram)
5 antiseptic wipe packets
2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each)
1 blanket (space blanket)
1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve)
1 instant cold compress
2 pair of nonlatex gloves (size: large)
2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each)
Scissors
1 roller bandage (3 inches wide)
1 roller bandage (4 inches wide)
5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches)
5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches)
Oral thermometer (non-mercury/nonglass)
2 triangular bandages
Tweezers
First aid instruction booklet

Those items should be in any first aid kit, but you really should add your items as well.  For instance, I like to add a burn cream to my kit.  I also have a 36” SAM splint in my kit.  I have the 36” one because it can be cut down if needed.  However, if your kit is big enough, they do make smaller SAM splints including ones for your finger.

I also keep a small magnifying glass in my kit.  I got one that came out of an eyeglass repair kit.  It comes in real handy if you need to remove a splinter or read the tiny directions on the side of a medicine bottle.

Also, you should take your environment into consideration.  If you live in a rural area, you may want a snakebite kit and maybe something to treat poison ivy.  If you are allergic to bee stings, you should definitely pack an epipen.

If you are interested in what kind of kit I have for my bug out bag, then feel free to check out my first aid bag.  I feel this kit is a pretty good basic kit and it is in a rugged and well built bag.

Basic Guide To Caring For Dental Injuries

Basic Guide To Caring For Dental Injuries

An unexpected accident or an injury to the teeth or mouth can result in tooth loss, broken teeth, soft tissue wounds, or even worse, a broken jaw. Preventing dental accidents are possible, but when you are prepared to take control if one does occur can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth.

If you experience an injury to your teeth or oral tissues, call your Holmdel dentist immediately. Many dentists allot time in their daily schedules for emergencies and are qualified to treat an array of dental injuries.

What to do when a Tooth is Knocked Out

Falling down or suffering a hard hit to the face can result in the loss of one or multiple teeth. First, retrieve the dislodged tooth and gently rinse it in water, being very careful not to remove any attached tissue. Gently attempt to place the tooth back into its socket. If that doesn’t work, place the tooth in a small cup of milk or salt water solution and get to your dentist as soon as you can. The faster you get to your dentist, the better chance you will have of saving your tooth.

Caring For Damaged Teeth

For whatever reason, your tooth or teeth can break, crack or chip. If this happens, retrieve and save as many pieces as possible. Gently rinse your mouth with water, and if you experience bleeding, directly apply gauze to the injured area until the bleeding ceases. Swelling will most likely occur so apply ice to the outside of your cheek or mouth and schedule an appointment to visit your dentist as soon as possible.

Treating Soft-Tissue Injuries

Injuries to the tongue, lips, gums and cheeks can cause pain, swelling and bleeding. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply direct pressure to the affected area with moistened gauze or a tea bag. You can also reduce swelling and slow the bleeding by applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek or mouth. If the bleeding doesn’t stop after 20-30 minutes of ice and pressure, the injury may require professional medical attention and you’ll need to get to your dentist or emergency room right away.

Lost Fillings or Crowns

Over time, dental fillings and crowns can loosen and eventually fall out. If you lose a filling, temporarily replace it with a piece of sugarless gum, and call your regular cosmetic dentist for an appointment as soon as possible. Keeping the sensitive nerves from being exposed will help reduce pain and discomfort until you can get to your dentist.

For lost or broken crowns, first try to place the crown back over the tooth. If this doesn’t work and your tooth is aching, apply clove oil with a cotton swab to the affected tooth to temporarily alleviate the pain. Visit your Holmdel cosmetic dentist as soon as you can, and remember to take the crown with you.

As a general rule, if it hurts, it’s a dental emergency. Don’t delay in getting to your Holmdel dentist if you are experiencing pain caused by an injury to your mouth or teeth. A speedy treatment significantly improves your odds of saving a damaged or injured tooth.

Sean Hartmen writes for Rooney and Rooney dentistry, a Holmdel implant dentist. Specializing in implants, Invisalign, veneers, whitening and Biolase Waterlase, this Holmdel cosmetic dentist is committed to the dental health of every patient it serves.

How To Treat Deep Cuts At Home

How To Treat Deep Cuts At Home

We’ve all had minor medical emergencies over the years while at home. Most of the time these things don’t require us to go rushing off to the hospital or emergency room and can be taken care of using simple home remedies and a little grit and determination. That’s what I want to talk about in this article today.

We’ve all cut ourselves at one time or another. Maybe you were chopping food, or maybe you were working on a home project out in the garage, or maybe you just slipped and fell and cut yourself on something. The fact of the matter remains that having a cut is not at all fun and especially if it’s a deep cut you may need to go to the hospital to get stitches. Sometimes though, you can take care of yourself right at home.

A good rule of thumb is that if a cut is longer than 1 inch or big enough for you to see underlying tissue underneath the cut then you should really go to the hospital and seek professional help right away.

You don’t want to wash the cut with hot water because hot water will dilate blood vessels and may actually increase the bleeding. At the same time, you don’t want to use hydrogen peroxide to disinfect cuts because it can easily damage the tissue around the cut.

What you should do is use a lot of water pressure when you’re cleaning at deep cut because it will spread the tissue apart and provide a much more thorough cleaning. Of course this is easier said than done because spraying yourself with a lot of water hurts like heck but sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and bear it.

You definitely want to use cool or tepid water when you’re cleaning a cut. Also you’re really going to want to pour water over the cut for two or three minutes which again is easier said than done!

Also be sure to wash the cut with soap to prevent infection. Any type of regular bath soap is okay but I really would stay away from the fancier soaps that have added ingredients. Basic regular soap is what we want here.

Once you’ve washed and cleaned the wound be sure to apply pressure with gauze or, if you don’t have gauze, a clean cloth of some sort. Applying pressure will hopefully stop the bleeding.

One thing to keep in mind, and this is very important, is that if the area around a cut turns numb or starts to turn blue in color then you should get to hospital emergency room as soon as possible. Blueness or numbness usually means that a nerve or a major blood vessel might have been damaged which means you can’t really take care of it on your own and need professional help.

So there you have several ways to correctly and incorrectly treat a deep cut. I know that very often we don’t want to hassle with doctors and hospitals and we definitely don’t want to pay the additional expense, but sometimes it’s better safe than sorry and you should just go see your doctor when you cut yourself.

Getting Rid Of Impetigo In Your Child

Getting Rid Of Impetigo In Your Child

Whether at home or in school, most kids are prone to minor accidents while they are busy at play.   They usually get minor bruises and scratches on their skin.  These small cuts and abrasions, however,   could become serious once skin infections set in and no proper treatment administered.

A good example of a bacterial infection is called Impetigo.   Impetigo is characterized by the presence of crusty lesions on the skin. This skin infection is caused by the following bacteria:  Streptococcus or staphylococcus aureus.  These bacteria are usually found on human skin and cause infections when  they gain entry via an open wound. Children infected with impetigo develop blisters that usually burst and ooze with fluid.  These blisters eventually harden into a honey-colored crust.
Impetigo can affect skin anywhere on the body but often attacks the area around the nose and mouth. It is more likely to show up on skin that is already irritated or raw from eczema, poison ivy, bug bites or a skin allergy to soap or makeup.

Impetigo is contagious. The infection is carried in the fluid that oozes from the blisters.  When the patient touches the infected skin and then touches another part of the body, the bacterial infection may be transferred to that spot.  It also can be spread from one person to another.  This is why school children easily spread the infection from one kid to another.  Impetigo can also be found in some adults who do not observe hygienic practices.

Symptoms of impetigo caused by streptococci include the presence of tiny blisters containing fluid.  The skin underneath them is moist and red.  A tan or yellow-brown crust covers the wet areas, making it look like they’ve been coated with honey or brown sugar.

A staphylococcus infection may cause larger blisters filled with clear fluid from the start but later on becomes cloudy. These blisters usually remain whole without bursting longer than the blisters from streptococcus impetigo do.  It may be difficult to tell if the skin infection is caused by strep or staph bacteria but the treatment is just the same.

Antibiotic ointment may be prescribed but if the skin infection has spread to other parts of the body, an antibiotic pill may be administered.  Because impetigo can spread from person to person through contact with the infected area, someone who has it should stay home from school while the infection is still contagious.  Usually, impetigo is no longer contagious after about 24 to 48 hours of treatment and after 3 days of treatment, the wounds should start to heal.
However, if the skin doesn’t begin to heal after this time, or if fever develops, a physician may be needed.  It is best to consult a doctor right away if the skin around the impetigo becomes red, warm, swollen, or tender.

Aside from taking or applying the medicine exactly as per advice by the doctor, gently wash the infected areas twice a day with an unscented soap and water, using a piece of clean gauze. If a spot is crusted, soak it in warm, soapy water for a while to remove built-up layers of the crust.  There is no need to get rid of all of the crust, but it is important to keep the area clean.

Covering the infected areas with gauze and tape or a loose plastic bandage will keep impetigo to others parts of the body.  Keep fingernails short until the infection clears up. Even though impetigo may itch, try not to scratch because scratching can spread the infection or tear the skin and make it worse. Scratching repeatedly can lead to scarring of the skin.  The best way to prevent impetigo is to simply follow good hygiene habits.

To Do In Case Of Burns

To Do In Case Of Burns

By definition, a burn may be an injury caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals, friction, or radiation.  In a recent study done in the United States, approximately 2.4 million burn injuries are reported each year.  And surprisingly, around eight thousand to twelve thousand burn victims die, and close to one million patients will sustain substantial or permanent disability secondary to their burn injury.  Burn injuries cut a close second place to motor-vehicle accidents as one of the leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States.

There are different classifications on the gravity of a burn.  This depends on the how much and how deep a damage it has incurred onto the victim.  These classifications are:
l    First degree burns.  Its effects are usually limited to redness, a white plaque, and minor pain on the affected site.  It usually affects only the epidermis, or the top part of the skin.
l    Second degree burns.  Aside from the usual effects of first degree burns, superficial blisters filled with clear fluid may form.  This may also cause moderate pain depending on the level of nerve damage.  This type of burn may involve the superficial and deep dermis layer.
l    Third degree burns.  This kind of burn additionally has charring of the burnt skin.  The charred part may produce hard, leather-like eschars.  Eschars are dead tissues that has separated from the skin surface.  The eschars often produce a purple fluid.  These types of pain are usually painless, as the burn has damaged the nerve endings surrounding the affected area.  Hair follicles and sweat glands may be lost due to the deep effect of third degree burns.
l    Fourth degree burns.  In this type of burn, most if not the entire dermis is lost.  Because of this, underlying muscles and bones are exposed and eventually burned as well.  These type of burns cause irreversible damage to the skin.
l    Fifth degree burns.  It additionally has charring or burning away of muscles, leaving bones exposed.  In this type of burn, muscles are roast thoroughly, to the point of immobility, and bones may get burned.
l    Sixth degree burns.  This type of burn leaves no muscle tissue unaffected.  All muscle tissues in the affected area is burned away, exposing charred bone.  This is the highest among the six burn categories.

First degree burns, also called low-grade burns are easy to remedy and prevent.  Among the most common first degree burn causes are: sunburn, friction burn, chemical burn, scalding, and coldburn.  Minor burns may cause swelling, blistering, and scarring.  For more severe cases it may cause shock and even death.  Severe burns may also lead to infections as the body’s protective barrier from environmental pollutants is damaged.  For any burn injury, immediate burn pain relief is the first thing that comes to mind.  This includes cleaning the burn wound, protecting it from developing infection, etc.  Here are a few first aid tips for burn pain relief:
For minor burns ranging from first to second degree burns:
l    Cool the burn.  Hold the injured area under cool, running water for a minimum of five minutes, or until the pain subsides.  If you cannot stand the impact of running water on the wound, immerse the wound in cool water or cool it with a cold compress.  This helps reduce the swelling of the burn wound and provides temporary burn pain relief.
l    Cover the wound with a sterilized gauze bandage.  Wrap the gauze loosely around the wound to prevent putting pressure on the burned skin.
l    Taking over-the counter pain relievers.  Medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen may help bring temporary burn pain relief.

l    Do not remove burnt clothing.
For major burns ranging from third to sixth degree burns:
l    Do not immerse severely large burns in cold water as this may cause the victim to go into shock.
l    Cover the burn area with sterile, non-stick bandage.  This is to ensure that the burnt area does not get further infected.

Burns are not simple injuries that can be ignored.  Burn wounds should not be taken for granted.  These wounds may become breeding ground for infection if not cared for properly.  If unsure of how to go about with burn accidents, it is best to call emergency medical service for assistance.

Vaginal Yeast Infection Treatment – What 3 Home Remedies Can You Use To Treat Yeast Infections?

Vaginal yeast infection is a condition that affects a lot of women in the world today. In the United States of America alone it affects up to twenty-five percent of the populace.

Yeast infection is a type of fungal infection which is commonly caused by an overgrowth of fungus in your body. Candida albicans is one of the more common types of these funguses. Candida is the medical term for yeast infection.

This condition often results in numerous physical symptoms including, but not limited to, the following; itching, whitish vaginal discharge, redness, discomfort during sexual intercourse, burning sensation while urinating, and pain within and around the genitalia.

While this condition may seem severe, it is actually treatable if not left unattended. This article will reveal 3 very effective vaginal yeast infection treatments that you can apply from your home…

#1 Use Garlic…

Garlic is a very common household ingredient which you can use to successfully treat yeast infections. You can use it as a sort of suppository; do this by peeling a clove of the garlic, wrapping it in sterile gauze, lubricating it with vegetable oil and finally inserting it into your vagina.

You should make it easy to locate at a later time by leaving a small piece of the gauze sticking out or simply by attaching a thread or string to one end. Additionally, yogurt can be used as another vaginal yeast infection treatment…

#2 Eat Yogurt…
This is one very common home remedy for yeast infection. While it may be so, many studies conclude that eating yogurt at regular intervals not only treats this condition, but also helps you prevent it from occurring in the first place.

You should ensure that you go for yogurts that contain the least amount of additives and those with active cultures – identifiable by reading and ensuring that “live cultures” or “active cultures” is written on its label. Another method that you can employ to combat this condition is to eliminate sugar from your diet…

#3 Avoid Sugar…

Sugar is one of the most common catalysts where yeast infection is concerned. You should avoid sugar completely or at least try to decrease your intake of it if total elimination is impossible.

The fact is this: Yeast feeds on sugar and as long as it has its food supply, it will continue to plague you. Cut its source of life by avoiding sweets of all kinds. Examples include; refined sugar, sugary fruits and foods.

Do K&N Air Filters Really Last That Long?

Do K&N Air Filters Really Last That Long?

Ever since K&N came onto the automotive accessories scene 30 years ago, they’ve been the most trusted name in performance air filtration for one reason: they last. Just how long do they last? The answer will surprise you (and save you a ton of money on disposable air filters).

Regularly changing your air filter is important to keep your engine performing at its peak. When air is restricted, your engine can fail, leading to problems that include overheating and even a cracked block. The life of a standard air filter depends largely on how much crud it collects. Believe it or not, a slightly dirty air filter actually cleans more efficiently than one that’s brand new. That’s because the debris trapped in the air filter screens out smaller particles. Eventually though, every filter reaches the saturation point, causing a noticeable pressure drop that restricts airflow. As a result, fuel economy, performance and emissions erode and continue to suffer until the dirty filter is replaced.

This is where K&N far surpasses the competition. Their air filters are reusable! In general, the average disposable air filter will last between 20,000 – 30,000 miles on a vehicle that sees run-of-the-mill city driving. This rating diminishes when your driving conditions include areas with poor air quality (we’re looking at you, Los Angeles). Airborne contaminates ranging from smoke and smog to dust and even pollen can clog an air filter and drastically reduce its lifespan to only a month or two. But with a K&N filter, all you have to do is rinse it out. The washable and reusable pleated and oiled cotton gauze filtration medium is good for a staggering 50,000 miles between cleanings and lasts for the life of your vehicle.

The secret to the K&N filter is the filter medium. It’s constructed from four to six sheets of pleated and oiled cotton-gauze, layered between two sheets of aluminum wire mesh. This proven design catches dirt, dust and other harmful particles like no other filter on the market while allowing clean, power-enhancing air to flow freely to your engine. Backed by a 10-year, 1,000,000-mile warranty and designed specifically to your make, model and year, a K&N air filter delivers practically unrestricted air flow, producing gains in horsepower while allowing your engine to run cleaner and with greater fuel efficiency. In addition, they’re legal in all 50 states and will not void your vehicle warranty.

Last but not least is the added benefit to the environment. Their reusable quality makes K&N air filters environmentally-friendly. Whether they’re used as a car air filter or truck air filter, they greatly reduce the number of disposable air filters that would normally have been used over the life of your vehicle, eventually ending up as trash in a landfill.

Good luck finding another filter that out performs and outlasts your <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.autoanything.com/air-filters/60A2090A0A0.aspx”>K&N air filter</a>. Whether you’re looking for a <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.autoanything.com/air-filters/10A50371.aspx”>truck air filter</a> or something for your car, you’ll save a ton of money over the lifetime of your vehicle with the purchase of a single K&N air filter.

How to Handle your Dog’s Injury

How to Handle your Dog’s Injury

When your dog gets bitten, either by another dog or another animal, then that bite wound can be potentially very dangerous.  Animal saliva is filled with bacteria that can cause infection through the wound.  In addition, even small bites can severely damage your pet’s underlying tissue.

Any time your dog gets bitten, whether it is a big bite or a small bite, it is always a good idea to take your pet to the vet to make sure that the problem does not get any worse.  However, here are 5 things that you can do to keep your dog’s bite wound under control.

1.  It is common for dogs to lash out when they are in pain.  Therefore, the first thing that you need to do is to use a muzzle to protect yourself in case he suddenly snaps.  You need to wrap your dog’s mouth closed before you begin to treat the wound.  If you do not have a muzzle available, you can improvise one by using gauze or pantyhose.  Be careful not to cover the nostrils.  If your dog is having difficulty breathing or starts to get sick, immediately remove the muzzle.

2.  If your dog is too small to wear a muzzle, you can still protect yourself by wrapping his head with a towel before you begin the treatment.  However, do not leave the towel too long or wrap it too tightly because it could cut off your dog’s air supply.

3.  Your next step is to trim the hair around the area of the bite wound.  This makes the wound easier to clean and will also help the bite heal faster by airing out the area.  You can use scissors, a disposable razor, or electric clippers to trim his hair.  Before you start, gently smear a thin layer of water-soluble jelly such as K-Y jelly right into the wound in order to prevent stray hair from falling into the wound.  When you are finished trimming the hair, clean the bite wound thoroughly to avoid infection.  Clean the bite by flushing it for about five minutes with lukewarm running water.  However, if the bite was left unnoticed until after 24 hours later, bacteria may already have set in.  In this case, scrub the bite wound with an antibacterial soap and then flush it with warm, running water.

4.  When you have finished washing and drying the wound, apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin.  Next, bandage the area with gauze or a clean cloth.  Make sure that the bandage is loose enough that you can slip a finger underneath.  A tight bandage could interfere with your dog’s circulation.

5.  Last but not the least, it is very important to keep your dog’s vaccinations current, especially his rabies vaccination.  Rabies are a serious viral disease that is fatal if left untreated.

Tips on Hiking Safety

Tips on Hiking Safety

Hiking can be a great outdoor vacation or adventure, and usually it is not dangerous. But, you are outside and often find yourself far from civilization, and you could get injured or even worse. With that in mind, it is very beneficial to heed some basic safety tips to keep your hiking adventure a pleasant experience.

First, do not travel alone. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. If you are strolling along a well-traveled area, you are probably safe. But, hiking through a thick forested area with canyons and winding trails is a different story. You could easily get lost.

Traveling with someone can help in many ways, especially if your partner has some experience with hiking. You can help each other up steep grades or apply first-aid if needed, though hopefully not. Also, if one hiker is injured, the other can travel back to the trail head to seek help.

Secondly, it is important to know where you are going. You may want to give someone your tentative course before you leave in the event you do get lost. Stay on well-traveled or clearly marked trails, that is unless you are experienced enough to go off the main trails.

No, the marked trails may not be as interesting but getting lost is even less fun. A map, GPS or compass is a necessity for any serious hiking trip. Since not all GPS units function in all areas, get details on your travel destination and determine if your GPS unit will help you in that location.

Third, do not go overboard on the gear you bring but be sure to take some basic gear. Bring either matches or a lighter, but keep in mind that lighters can run out of fuel and matches can get wet. Take your pick! A knife can also be a lifesaver, in the literal sense, especially those with useful gadgets.

A simple first aid kit can also be a lifesaver. Include bandages and gauze, anti-bacterial cream and other standard items. Sunburn and anti-itch reliever and aspirin may also prove to be appreciated items during the hike.

It is, of course, important to have some knowledge of first-aid also. For example, aspirin can at times be harmful. Or, if you do not know the difference between arterial and venous bleeding, bandages and gauze will do you no good.

A flashlight is a necessity, and toilet paper is just a good idea!

Fourth, take some basic provisions to keep you hydrated and your energy level high. Fluids, both water and sport drinks, are obviously essential. A heat stroke can kill someone, but it is preventable. Water weighs about eight pounds per gallon so take what you need, but not less.

Be sure to bring enough food for the entire hike. Depending on what you ring, about one pound daily is average for a male of medium build.

Finally, use common sense. Enjoy your hiking holiday and the beautiful surroundings. But, do not get carried away and tempt Mother Nature!
